Photographing Wedding Rings with a Natural Reflector

For the past few years, I've been a pretty big proponent of natural reflectors (things around you that reflect light without the use of artificial light…I've blogged about this in detail HERE), and I've also shared my approach on how I photograph wedding rings. Well, today I thought it'd be fun to combine the two.

At last Saturday's wedding, I wasn't able to shoot the rings until after the ceremony (I prefer to do it before, but it doesn't always work out), so I ran upstairs and tried to leverage the last of sunset light by placing the rings on a windowsill. I placed the rings on their wedding invitation and window light came in from behind the rings, causing the face of the rings to be too dark for my preference.

I looked around and quickly found a white piece of paper (it was a scrap piece of paper from the trash can, no bigger than an index card) and used my left hand to hold it so it reflected light onto the rings. Here's what the situation looked like (these images are straight out of camera)…

You can actually see the reflection of the white paper in the photo on the right, but it provided just enough light to create more dynamic lighting and allowed me to capture the details effectively.

I hope this helps and if you have natural reflector tips, I'd love to hear them!
