How to Deal with Rowdy Groomsmen

Dear Jasmine,
I have a hard time managing the wedding party during the formal photos. Actually I could condense it down to the guys (guys get flirty or think they are “funny” when its just me with the guys alone). Any tips on how to “lay down the law” without bringing out the inner…biatch…or is that the only way?!
Sincerely,
Sheriff of Biatchville

Dear Sheriff,
At the risk of sounding like a self-help guru, we accept the behavior we think we deserve. Does that rub you the wrong way? If so, sorry not sorry.

There are times when I feel intimidated approaching boisterous/drunk/full of themselves groomsmen, but I don't show it. Why? Because I don't deserve being treated as anything less than the respectable photographer I am. The minute I feel like guys are crossing the point from fun to unmanageable, I raise my voice and ask for everyone's attention. I will keep asking for it until they've quieted, then I proceed to itemize what I plan to shoot, how long it'll take me, and request their full cooperation. Then I follow up with: “The faster you let me get these photos complete, the sooner you'll get back to partying!”

This usually does the trick. But, more than anything, it's about clearly demonstrating your professionalism and strength in stressful situations.

If you're worried about working with a rambunctious group of groomsmen, feel free to email the groom and/or the bride in advance asking for what you need on the wedding day. Here's an example email template you can keep on file for future use…
Dear Groom,
I'm looking forward to the wedding and I know great things are in store! It sounds like it's shaping up to be a full day of fun and big party!
I want you to have as much time with your groomsmen in a casual setting, so I'd love to work quickly through the formal photos as fast as possible (the less time I spend trying to get attention, the more time y'all have to enjoy the day!). When the time comes, I'd appreciate if you encourage the groomsmen to help make the portraits end faster by simply listening to my instructions and chilling out.
As soon as I'm done with portraits, you and your friends can relax and enjoy the rest of the day with ease.
Thanks for your understanding in advance and I'm looking forward to seeing you and Bride soon!
Much Appreciation,
Photographer

Either option you choose is wonderful…but the takeaway from this post is the following: take control, ask for what you want, and accept what you deserve. If you'd like to download more email templates, feel free to check them out HERE!
