Want Moments, Not Things

T
he TSA agent was patting me down. I just walked through the airport scanner and the alarm sounded. I apologized and scrambled to remove the cell phone from my back pocket. As she followed procedure and patted me down, she turned and yelled at the agent in the next line, It's like they say...you always want what someone else has!

They umm-hmph'd each other from a distance.

As I boarded my flight from San Francisco, her words rang in my ear. If this was true--we desire what resides in the possession of others--I told myself to want moments, not things...happiness, joy, contentment. Sometimes it's easy to look on the outside and wish for more, but behind simplicity sits life's most beautiful memories.

Happy Friday, friends.

A Long Time Coming...

Dear JD,
This is a thank you letter that's been a long time coming. Instead of the notes I leave scattered around the house, I wanted to publicly express my appreciation for all you do. I guess I'm embarrassed to admit how much I take for granted. At the wedding last weekend a guest stared at our camera gear in disbelief. She leaned over and whispered, you don't really carry that backpack all day do you? I stared blankly at the wedding guest then whispered back, No, but HE does, pointing to you as you piled the 70-pound pack on your back.

You smiled and waved from a distance.

Then you gave me your coat because the ballroom was cold and I didn't bring a jacket.

I saw you from a distance documenting cocktail hour while making guests laugh at your charm.

I worried I didn't get a portrait shot of the bagpiper at the end of the ceremony, then you patted my hand and said you had it covered.

You grabbed the valet ticket early to have the car ready by the time our photography services commenced.

Everything you do makes me breathe easier. Your actions enable me to shine and I can't thank you enough for all your are. Thank you for being a wonderful partner, shooter, and friend.

Love,
me

Many thanks to our assistant Kendra for grabbing this photo of us together at our last wedding.

My Latest Obsession: Cute Animal Photos

T
his past week I was at a conference and while I was away, I desperately missed my dog. Yes, I'm one of those dog owners who thinks she shares a secret language with her canine friend, so I practically begged JD to send photos of Polo. My husband included himself in most of the pictures so I couldn't play favorites.

The look Polo gave me in the each photo conveyed his deepest wish for me to return and cuddle on the couch because JD doesn't do it right.

In case you don't think I'm weird enough, here are a few photos I keep in a file on my desktop...whenever I need a pep in my step, this fellas do the trick!

If I saw this creature running through my house, I might scream, but photo looks like it's singing. Which reminds me of the mice who helped Cinderella. Which reminds me of love. Which makes me love this creature.

And, boom, now I'm part of the LET'S POST PHOTOS OF CATS ON THE INTERNET phenomenon...but, really...this is beyond.

And just like that, I this puppy makes me want to go on a hike.

Okay so I don't know what this is, but I love it sooooo much...I just want to cuddle with all its cuteness!!! I might die.

Happy Thursday!

Kisses + Disses : Movies of the 80s
05.31.13
- Personal

A couple of days ago, I shared the following on social media:

What transpired online what a lot of shock and awe...which made me feel totally uncool and out of touch. Apparently, watching teen movies from the 1980s is a rite of passage and having not done so, I was somehow incomplete.

BUT let the record show that it isn't my fault. Like any normal American kid, I totally blame my parents. I tried explaining that my lack of awesome John Hughes movie viewings (no, I haven't seen 16 Candles or Ferris Bueller's Day Off) was on account of my parents' conservatism (I wasn't allowed to watch The Smurfs, either). As far as sheltered kids were concerned, my parents treated my sheltering like it was code red bomb alerts.

However, I can admit seeing Dirty Dancing as a kid without my parents' knowledge. A group of neighborhood kids smuggled a VHS recording of the movie and we watched it in Wendy Florez's basement on a sunny afternoon. My legs were glued to the sofa (due in part to Patrick Swayze's abs and in part to the fear of God striking me dead for my sins) and I was smitten. Days later I got in trouble for fighting with my sister and sent to my room. Behind closed doors I said, NOBODY PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER!!

And that line? Well that made the risk of watching Dirty Dancing entirely worth it. Amen.

This leads me to another installment of Kisses and Disses...

This week's DISSES do to...
*Parental conservatism. My mom clearly kept me from being cool.
*Game night. Yesterday friends came over for dinner and games, and once I revealed my competitive streak, I'm certain they'll never come over again...nothing gets between me and bragging rights.
*Patrick Swayze. He made me realize I'll never have a man lift me above his head on a dance floor.

This week's KISSES go to...
*JD. He bought me Breakfast Club so we could enjoy a taste of the 80s together.
*B Toffee. If you love toffee (as I do), look no further. This Newport Beach shop has your sweet tooth covered...love it!
*Internet friends. Y'all made me appreciate my sheltered life, but also excited to catch up on a series of great movies!

Happy Friday!
