Dijana and Jason : Day After

e saw her from afar more often than once. Gliding in the corner of the large room, but never going anywhere. It was Jason who made the first move at their gym. You know you're not doing much on that elliptical glider, right? Dijana, beguiled at this stranger's approach and simultaneous criticism, paused for a brief moment, then resumed her gliding. Just who, exactly, did this guy think he was?! What type of guy just interrupts a cardio session like that? Little did Dijana realize the confident stranger would soon be her husband.

Jason and Dijana live in Los Angeles, but married in Croatia a couple months ago amongst closest family and friends. When recently visiting the San Juan Capistrano Mission, the old rock facades reminded Dijana of her home country of Croatia and she decided to complete her wedding photos in Orange County. The day was nothing short of beautiful--the type of warm and chilled day only November can produce--and the sun kissed their hair as they walked through the terracotta porticos. Making their way around the Mission, Jason would sometimes surprise Dijana with a kiss and she'd smile bashfully. She was happy walking next to her husband. So happy, in fact, she might have looked the same as when she first met Jason: Gliding across thin air.

Here's a few of my favorite photos...

Dijana, you're beautiful! :) A special thanks to the ever-amazing, Carina of Flawless Faces, Inc...she's so fabulous at working with a girl and contouring her face with makeup...love her! :)

Santa Ana College

I
'm usually greeted with stoic stares and large, dramatic gulps whenever I tell my loved ones, We need to talk. I'm pretty sure conversations with me are akin to repeatedly hitting your funny bone, watching grass grow, or underwater basket weaving. Or at least that's what they say. But does that stop me? No, no it doesn't. Oh, Internet, I'm a talker. I talk about talking, and talk about talking too much.

So, one could just imagine my pleasure when I was invited by Professor Michael LaNoue to speak to his Santa Ana photography class. Speak to people mandated to listen to me?! Well, I'll be!

Last night JD and I made our way into the classroom and were greeted by such an amazing group of students. The vibe of the group was awesome and I had such a great time talking. Obviously, right? I spoke about the importance of creating a strong web presence in defining their business and brand, and I hope I was able to proffer a little help as they begin their careers.

Here's a picture JD took of the class...

Lastly, I would like to thank Professor LaNoue for his warm invitation and for his gracious hospitality. How I wish I had a photography professor when I went to college and I think he's doing amazing things for his students! :)

Happy Wednesday!

here’s always that brief moment of trepidation before I start clicking. The split-second of so-help-me-God before I turn, smile, and start shooting another photographer. It is one of the most nerve-wracking experiences for me and I hope to one day master the art of photographing a peer. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore it, but I have so much adrenaline pumping through my veins I could lift a crowded school bus. With my pinky finger.

A few months ago, while JD and I met with our accountant, the accountant explained whenever he felt under pressure to perform a task at his office, he doesn’t sigh and become overwhelmed. He, instead, pumps himself up by telling himself, It’s SHOWTIME!!!

To be honest, I thought it was one of the cheesiest things I’d ever heard. UNTIL I STARTED USING IT MYSELF?!? It kinda started as a joke when JD turned to me at a wedding one Saturday morning and was all, It’s SHOWTIME! I crumbled from laughter…then decided that this was the best way to start a shoot.

I explained in yesterday’s blog post about the ever-amazing Amy Wenzel photographing JD and me…so then it was my turn to photograph Amy and her fabulous husband, David. After bench-pressing a crowded school bus for a couple hours, I drove to Los Angeles and prayed for the best.

It’s SHOWTIME…

Amy and David…thank you for making my world a little richer. A little brighter. A world filled with shrieks, laughter, and starjacks. Can’t wait to hang out again soon and I’m so excited for your bright future together. Thanks for being more fabulous than I could ever put into words. Oh, and don’t worry…I still plan on calling you everyday just to convince you to move to Orange County! ;) Much Love…J*

Shoot Me

hen I was in high school, my best friend’s mother endured a painful divorce. Shortly after seeing her husband pack his bags and leave for good, she poured herself into the Internet. Reading, blogging, forums, IMing. The works. My best friend’s mother stayed up late at night and found herself making friends from around the United States and spent hours on the web.

Some days, she would go on and on about her friends, or how her friend Sally said something quite funny, or how their group of friends were planning a big IM fest later that night. It drove my best friend nuts. At the time, she just didn’t understand how her mother’s friends were invisible creatures who took the form of letters on an illuminated computer screen.

One day, while my best friend and I studied for a test in her living room, a large package was delivered from her mother’s cyber friend and opened to reveal a life-size porcelain doll. With angel wings. After waves of rolling laughter, my best friend and I composed ourselves and watched as her mother proudly placed the doll in the living room. You know, to protect us.

All these years later, I still feel kinda badly about laughing. Little did I realize that my best friend’s mother was two-steps ahead of us in Cyberland. Creating forward-this-to-five-of-your-friends emails…hoisting the IM craze…forging invisible friends. Looking back, I really understand where she was coming from. Truly.

A little more than a year ago, I came across Amy Wenzel’s Blog. I immediately fell in love with her voice. They way she writes makes me laugh and her photos are truly fantastical. We started emailing back and forth and have since become cyber friends. Having never met—but loving every ounce of her—I almost mailed her a life-size porcelain doll. With angel wings. You know, to protect her from the wilds of editing.

Amy and her husband David planned a trip to Southern California, so we—of course—put our crazy heads together and planned a photo shoot. One day I shot Amy and David…and the following day, she shot JD and me. I can’t explain how much fun we had and I’m determined to make her leave Grand Rapids, Michigan to move next door to me. I seriously would make those tin-can phones and connect our offices with two cans and a piece of string. She’s just that awesome.

Here are a few images of our photo shoot, but you can check out more on her blog! Check back tomorrow because I’ll be posting their pictures…

Thinkers

H
e always gets this look when I say it. A look of painful consternation. JD clenches his teeth and squeezes his eyes, as if waiting to be dealt an invisible blow to the jaw. Okay, so I’ve been thinking… Insert jaw clench here. Whenever I start a sentence like this, it’s as if he’s waiting to be punched. Or pry open his wallet. And, in most cases, I’m not sure what he thinks is worse. I have a questionable record in hatching outlandish plans and goals, most of which cost more than I thought.

Yesterday morning, I told JD that I had been thinking. He sighed. I assumed he sighed because he feared I’m the next Einstein with all the thinking I’ve been doing. I’m a thinker, Internet.

My plan was to redecorate the living room and dining room. In one day. I made a list of everything we needed (a list that would make Zsa Zsa Gabor proud) and headed to South Coast Plaza. Seven hours later, we end up with nothing. NOTHING. Not as much as a dining room chair.

Frustrated, we plopped on two green leather chairs in Crate&Barrel. The green leather chairs I wanted so badly, but would have to sell a couple organs to afford. We decided to call it a day and grab dinner, leaving my redesign dreams for another day. As we walked out of the store, JD held open the door for me and I turned to him and said, Okay, so I’ve been thinking…

Yup. Me and Einstein. We’re thinkers. And we’ll change the world one theory (or, ahem, green leather chair) at a time.
