Kisses and Disses : Remix
02.06.09
- Personal

B
ack in the day (circa 2006) when I started my blog, I wrote weekly posts called Kisses and Disses. They were random entries dedicated to the banality that is my life highlighting the good parts (kisses) and the bad parts (disses). I don't know why I stopped writing them, but I did. Forever to be lost in the annals of Jasmine Star Blog history. Kinda.

A couple days ago, I received an email from a loyal blog reader named Raquel Hubbard asking for them to be revived and I was all, Don't mind if I do...

This week's DISSES go to...
*The rain. I don't know why liquid must fall from the sky...it boggles my mind It does nothing for my shoes. Or hair.
*The Internet. We're not friends. For those of you who tried to log into Photography Mentor last night for the video chat, but couldn't...I'm sorry. I think I broke it. There might be a chance to see it online, so I'll keep you posted as things progress.
*My hair. I'm looking like a Shetland pony these days. Yo, Seabiscuit called and wants his hair back!

This week's KISSES go to...
*JD. I know, I know...laaaaame. But, really, he's done so much for me this week...like, maybe even too much. I don't think I'd be able to do what I love if it wasn't for his continual support.
*My lasagna. I'm planning on making it tonight and if you follow my status updates on Facebook, you'll know the last time I made it for dinner, Betty Crocker herself asked me for the recipe. Honest.
*The internet. I know, I'm a flip-flopper, right? While I hate her inconsistency, she's helped me make some wonderful friends on the web. And my blog. She was like to proverbial Yenta when she paired me with my blog. I guess I owe her one.

And because posts are always better with pictures, here's one from a recent engagement session...more coming soon! ;)

The Posse

J
ust wanted to remind those interested that I'll be giving a live video chat TODAY on Photography Mentor at 6pm PST. The chat is free and I hope a few of my blog readers can swing by for a chat! But don't worry, in case no one shows up, I made my mom create an account. At least I know I won't be alone. But I fear she'll make me recite all the Bible verses she made me memorize growing up or subject me to horrible childhood memories. Remember the time we had to have The Talk when I saw Barbie and Ken sleeping in the same bed..?

Oh, Internet, for all things good, SAVE ME.

In other news, I'm stoked to announce the ultra fab posse who'll join me for the WPPI/Las Vegas Morning Shoot. For those who are interested, I grabbed all the entries (that made the deadline) and placed them on an Excel worksheet. Each person was assigned a number, then numbers were randomly chosen, and that's how I chose the 18 spots. Yes, 18. I gave one spot to the winner of the Thirst Relief Auction (com'on, folks...it's charity!), and one spot to a dear friend who I'd be honored to have by my side. So..here's the crazy bunch that'll shoot with me...

Bob Pattison : Bob Pattison Photography
Wade Heninger : Wade Heninger Photography
Cathy Crawley : Beautiful Moments Photography
Daria Bishop: Daria Bishop Photography
Emily Griffith : Lemon Lime Studios

I will be emailing the posse ASAP with further details.

Lastly, to all the AH-MAZ-ZING couples who submitted photos and their stories....thank you. JD received some of the coolest and heartfelt letters and we were blown away by the love people share. Thank you for inviting us to peek into your lives and hearts. Love is a beautiful thing. When JD and I read that Mark and Jaclyn Lippelmann had no photos together (even after being married a year and not hiring a wedding photographer), my insides fell to mush and we thought they'd be perfect candidates to be mobbed by photographers in Las Vegas. Jaclyn's email was so sweet, sincere, and humorous and I have no doubt she and Mark will bring their fierceness all the way from Kansas!

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to drop a line on my blog...although we may not be shooting together, I sure hope we get to meet at WPPI! :)

Mindy : Boudoir

hen we first spoke, I took an immediate liking to her. She spoke fast and laughed easily. Though Mindy was just an invisible voice on the other side of the phone, I imagined her talking with her hands and smiling broadly. The more I got to know her, the more I realized her future husband is a terribly lucky guy! Mindy is an astronomical business woman, educated, and has a heart of gold. When she asked if I'd be able to take boudoir photos, I was honored!

Although I'm not Mindy's wedding photographer, I'm sure her husband-to-be will be very happy when he sees the album she's created for him! VaVaVoom! Here are a couple pictures of the shoot at the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach...

Instead of 74

o I've been juggling a few balls lately (in fact, I should join the circus with my mad skills), but in light of my impending trip to Las Vegas for WPPI, I decided to rearrange my schedule for a photography website tune-up. As I was reading through the comments from yesterday's blog post regarding the Free Vegas Shoot, I realized there are a TON of new photographers attending the conference this year and I'm stoked! The industry is rapidly changing and it's awesome to see so many people building their business on their hopes and dreams!

To be honest, there are times during the conference when I feel awkward and out of place (moments when I feel like a tomato in a fishbowl...like I don't belong), but I wholeheartedly know the networking opportunities and the learning outweigh my childhood baggage of social leprosy. At WPPI, I make it a point to get to know new people and create bonds with peers. Often times, the people I meet don't know me, so they'll eventually check out my website...and I want to make sure it's a true representation of my current work and brand.

Today, I relaunched an updated Jasmine-Star.com with new gallery photos, slideshows, contact page, and--best of all--a new gallery for videos! Clients responded so well to my documentary video so I decided to embed it in my site...and I hope to add more in the future! Using Showit Sites makes updates and video embedding super easy, so I can go back to juggling 73 balls and bowling pins...instead of 74.

Holllllllla!

Like the Rinse Cycle, But Better

ometimes people compare their lives to a rollercoaster...you know, The Ups and Down and Twists and Turns. Kinda cliche, but I get it. I'd like to think of my life more like a washer machine. I do the same thing, but try to do it well. With every proverbial load of laundry, I'm given a chance to make things better. Without sounding too trite, to make the dirty...well, clean. Every cycle presents a new set of obstacles, but I eventually get through them.

In the Prewash Cycle, Load One of 2006, I had the coolest opportunity to attend WPPI in Las Vegas with one of the world's premiere wedding photographers, Mike Colon. He was a sponsored photographer at a plethora of platform presentations and tradeshow booths, so he asked if I could go along as an assistant. After a momentary lapse of consciousness, I readily accepted and spent my first WPPI experience in Las Vegas meeting so many people and getting entrenched in the industry. By the time the spin cycle came circling to a close, I felt incredibly blessed and didn't quite understand why I had been given this opportunity.

Until a couple days ago.

I was thinking about my experiences in the past with WPPI a couple days ago and I got an idea. And you know what happens when I get ideas. They! Are! Fun! And! Crazy!...and usually require JD to sit me down from running circles in our bedroom late at night to think things through. Soooo, here's my plan...I'd be honored to meet some of my blog readers in Las Vegas for a Pre-Dawn Shoot! Yup, I said it. A shoot...IN THE MORNING...preferably just as the sun rises. Oh yeah.

Here's the plan...
When: Tuesday, February 17, 2009
Time: 6:45am (if you plan on partying on Monday night, this shoot ain't for you!)
Where: Vegas Strip...details to come...
Cost: FREE...I've been given so much in the past, I firmly believe this is a very small way to pay it forward...
How to get a spot: Leave a comment with the name of your studio and spots will be given at random (please leave a valid email address as this will be my only form of contact). I'm so sorry, but entries will not be accepted via email. If you email me on account of the shoot, I will harpoon you...my inbox is a little crazy right now...so please forgive my belligerence! ;)
Deadline: All submissions must be in by THIS Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 12pm PST. Submissions posted after the deadline will not be considered.

Details:
*The shoot is limited to 20 people, max!
*Please do not RSVP if you're unsure of your presence in Las Vegas...this is a serious shoot and spots will be given in good faith of attendance. If you don't show up at the shoot, I'll harpoon you. And I have great aim.
*Spots are non-transferrable...meaning, you cannot RSVP and then pass your spot off to your roommate because you're hung over from partying too hard...if you'd like, you can join me somewhere on Monday night as I sip Pellegrino with a twist of orange! ;)
*You're not required to bring anything, but a camera is suggested.

If there are any of you who'd like to join me in the Prewash Cycle, Load Three 2009, I'd be honored to have you at my side as we shoot at sunrise! I'm in the process of looking for a couple to shoot, so if anyone is interested in working it for my camera, shoot JD an email (jd.star.photo@gmail.com) with a picture of you and your significant other by THIS Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 12pm PST And, no, I won't harpoon the senders of these emails!

Hope to meet some of you soon and here are a couple shots of Lauri and Mike from my sunrise shoot last year at WPPI...

Lastly, the fabulous crew at PhotographyMentor.com invited me to do a FREE video chat THIS Thursday at 6pm PST! Oooooh, it's gonna be so much fun! We'll talk about my disdain for vanilla scented body lotion, why we let hair crimping die, and Justin Timberlake. Obviously. And I guess if you have a photography questions, we can kinda get with that too! ;) Be sure to sign up for FREE now so you'll be ready to rock it out with me on Friday! Hollllllla!

**UPDATED TO ADD**
The shoot will end around 8am...but if you were planning on attending a morning session, feel free to leave at your convenience!
