Happy Birthday, JD

Tonight, as JD's family and myself clamored out of Buca Di Beppo, I stopped in my tracks. There–perched in a much too large, red booth–an elderly man leaned over to his wrinkled wife in a wheelchair adjacent to the table, cupped her lips between his thumb and index finger, and spoon fed her. He then wiped the edges of her mouth and smiled.

And I did too. Love is more than kisses and giggles, it's about feeding and wiping when you no longer can.

JD and I just got back from celebrating his birthday in Palm Springs and I think it's been his best birthday yet! Much like wine, JD gets better with time. We lounged around our hotel, went for long walks, and ate delicious food…which is all JD ever wants. Undivided attention, that is. And–if I was being totally honest–I'm only really good at giving divided. Attention, that is. I'm a multi-tasker (known on some days to fold socks, cut watermelon in cubes, talk on the phone, and paint my toes…SIMULTANEOUSLY) and it can drive him crazy. Sitting for sitting's sake was just what we needed…and the amazing sunshine didn't hurt either!

We drove back home today and met his family for dinner to cap a wonderful weekend. And that's where I saw the elderly gentleman and his lovely wife. Feeding and wiping. As we commemorated another birthday, I promised myself I'd be the luckiest girl to be able to feed JD for the rest of his life. And wipe his mouth when he no longer can.

And, yes, I know this post is about JD, but, com'on…just look at that face…it was as if Polo was just begging to steal the show from JD. I brought my camera along to document our trip, but some canine cuteness distracted me. At least JD is in the frame! 🙂
