He's Mean and I Love It!
05.23.07

It’s just an unexpected transition

That’s what JD told me a few days ago. Yes, but why do MY unexpected transitions come at all the wrong times, I moaned. JD muttered something about me throwing a pity party and inviting only myself, but I ignored him. That’s what I like most about JD—his unique ability to be passively aggressive. He’s one of the most kindest, gentlest and docile souls I know, but he also has this jagged mean streak. And I love it! I have a strong personality and while I might appear to be unruly, JD has me under his neatly manicured thumb. He doesn’t allow me to get away with pitying myself, speaking negatively, or making fun. Or else I know I have somethin’ fierce headed my way. He’s witty and clever…and can make fun of me in the meanest of ways. He’ll capitalize on my idiosyncrasies and whip a joke that will have me simultaneously in laughter and tears. He’s mean and I love it.

Hence the pity-party-that he-wasn’t-invited-to comment.

Today I’m floating back and forth between editing and filling cardboard boxes with remnants of our home. JD and I are moving to Irvine, so the next two or three weeks will be filled with shuttling furniture, shooting weddings and engagement sessions, and trying to regain a semblance of normalcy. I’ll most likely be blogging about my adventures of moving (Should the new couches go here or there?!) as well as my photography projects, so stay tuned as my life revs into overdrive!

P.S. Does anybody have good packing tips for a girl who has OCD and is fixated with packing tape? ;)

Becky and Drew : Wedding

T
he sun broke through the grey clouds and stroked the white panes of the plantation-style house. Girls in strappy shoes click-clacked across the wooden floor, balancing bouquets, makeup, and last-minute wedding necessities in their slender arms. Becky sat alone in front of a bay window while the makeup artist finished applying her lipstick and retouching the curls in her hair. Becky stood and dusted the invisible nerves off the front of her dress and slowly walked to the front door. She paced herself and drew in a deep breath before walking through the red door to see her future husband, Drew.

Drew looked handsome waiting under the shade of a sycamore tree. With his back turned to Becky, he waited patiently to see the woman he was to pledge his life to…the woman he wanted to share the remote control with, whose feet he wanted to rub indefinitely, whose grey hairs he wanted resting on his shoulders for eternity. As Becky stepped up behind Drew, he turned and embraced her so tightly he could have wrapped his arms around her twice. They remained that way until they realized the world hadn’t stopped on its axis.

I was blessed to document Drew and Becky’s nuptials last Saturday. Their friends and family were absolutely lovely and everyone came together to host a fun wedding…the weather was gorgeous and perfect for their outdoor reception and I want to thank everyone for being so kind.

Here are a few of my favorites…

JD captured this initimate moment during their First Look

A prayer before the ceremony...

Yes, Drew spent most of the reception dancing his feet off! :)

Nancy and James : Engagement

- Engagements - Slideshows

They fell in love over drugs.

Nancy and James met while in pharmaceutical school and studied chemistry…while simultaneously creating some of their own. They met when Nancy pledged the same fraternity James was a part of and though a year her senior, James was determined to make their relationship survive. After graduation, while Nancy was finishing her final year, James transferred from Northern California to Santa Barbara. They both worked hard at making their relationship flourish despite the distance and it paid off.

As their shoes left soft marks on the freshly waxed floor of Los Angeles Union Station, they walked through the loose crowds rushing to their departing train. The muffled sounds of trains in the distance floated through the concave waiting area, but they—being thoroughly enraptured with each other—appeared to hear none of it. Instead, they fell into each other’s arms and lazed in the sunset light bucketing through the circular windows overhead. Nancy and James share a love that is disseminated to those around, only in a slightly lesser amount, rightly reserving the crème de la crème for each other…sort of like saving the cake cherry for later.

Nancy and James are thoughtful, considerate, kind, and embracive to those who cross their path and I hope I captured a sliver of their glowing personalities during their engagement session. They have a gala of a day planned at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion this July and I’m so excited to be a part of their lavish affair!

I {HEART} My Shootsac

A
t first I didn’t know what it was…as I peeled back the plastic wrapping, I yelped as if someone has just stepped on my invisible tail. The yelp turned into shrieks of delight and I hugged my new Shootsac like it was there to save my life. I’ve been waiting for the Shootsac to be delivered since WPPI a couple months ago, and my bag was the first batch off the assembly line (if you ordered at WPPI, you should be receiving your bag shortly as well!). Jessica Claire asked if I’d be able to help her promote the bag and sell. And did I! I was on the showroom floor hawkin’ bags like nobody’s bid-ness…but it was easy because the bags are nothing short of amazing. I love them! They’re a perfect solution to shooting ease and comfortability…and style! The bag is an ergonomic sachel with six compartments—three in the front and back—and holds everything I need during a wedding. The bag is not intended to substitute a traditional backpack or rolling bag, it’s actually works in tandem with those bags. The Shootsac carries everything I need for that shooting situation, nothing else. I don’t have to worry about carrying a cumbersome backpack or run back to get something from it. In fact, everything I needed for my engagement session today fit in my Shootsac…it’s glorious! I didn’t even need to take my purse because it held everything I needed for the shoot…check it out:

If you haven’t done so already, do yourself a favor and purchase the Shootsac…and you can thank me later! ;)

Welcome to my NEW BLOG!

Y
ou know that feeling when you were a kid and it was time to open Christmas gifts, but your parents were caught up in a myriad of other “important” things? When I was six years old, a cup of coffee was not as important as opening the shiny packages, nor was waiting for my mother to find the right size trash bag to throw away the wrapping paper…apparently, my mother cared more about her living room remaining tidy than the sample Avon perfume that awaited her under the tree.

You know that feeling? Well, I’ve been feeling like that for the past few days.

The amazing and talented Brock Martin from Infidesign has been working diligently on my blog for the past couple months and I’m truly excited to see his hard work come to fruition. He has been instrumental in creating this blog and I’m truly thankful for all his hard work…words can’t describe how nice, professional, and fabulous he really is! :)

The rotating pictures in the masthead were all taken by the painstakingly talented, [b]ecker. He’s so incredibly talented behind the lens that if I didn’t like him so much, I’d hate him based solely on his photographic prowess ;) Being in front of a camera is quite difficult, but as we roamed the streets of Laguna Beach together, he made me feel nothing but me. Fun, dorky, humorous…like I said, he made me feel like all of me. He’s amazing and I can’t wait to one day pay his kindness forward.

Lastly, I have to thank the remarkable man I’m blessed to call my husband. JD was the nucleus of this blog…he’s believed in my ability to succeed from the first day I ever dreamed out loud of being a photographer. He was the catalyst for my contact with Brock and a cheerleader (the kind with pants, not a skirt!) from the beginning. This blog was actually my birthday gift…and I have to admit, it’s been my most favorite gift ever!

Just a couple things…
