A French Inspired Bridal Shower

A
s a child, I loved Connect the Dots. It just never got old to me. Ever. A series of dots soon became a bouquet of flowers. Or a wide-eyed dog. I loved it. Many years later, I still find myself connecting the dots...and people. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Jaclyne of Heavenly Blooms a few months ago and later introduced her to Chandra of Oh Lovely Day. Together they brainstormed ideas then turned to Amanda of In The Now Weddings for stylizing the shoot...and then a snowflake turned into a snowball. A very big snowball.

What started as a French-inspired bridal shower turned into a photographic feast of wedding details. When I arrived at the Richard Nixon Library, I was surprised by just how much there was...the team turned a simple idea into something far greater...they were absolutely ah-maz-zing to work with!

I was thrilled see this shoot featured on Style Me Pretty and I must thank everyone involved who made this simple idea come to life...

Kisses and Disses : Acupuncture + Ezekiel Bread
05.24.10
- Personal

I
t just got to a point where I walked around like I was auditioning for a remake of The Golden Girls. You know, the one where they invite their Latina neighbor to come live with them. I walked around with my hand to my lower back and my face scrunched like I was very focussed on the next step. Slowwwwwly. Painfully. Where's Rose when you need her?!

My mother in law, upon hearing of my back aches, suggested I try acupuncture. This is also the same lady who harbors Chinese herbs in her cabinet like China was disappearing. Forever. And guess what? I MARRIED HER SON. Who also collects said herbs. Please don't get him started on ginger root. Where was I? Oh, yes. Acupuncture. So my mother in law suggests her acupuncturist and JD sets up an appointment.

There I am laying on my stomach with, oh, like a thousand needles in my back and I think to myself, Why didn't I just rub the ginger root on my back like JD suggested?! Then...then! Then the acupuncturist--who doesn't speak english very well but whispers soothingly--hooks the needle to a stimulation machine. You know, the one that jolts your muscles with ELECTRIC CURRENT.

I get home and tell JD of the ordeal. Then he apologizes because he sent me to the wrong acupuncturist. The one his mother never suggested. So this is the part of the Golden Girls episode where Blanche and Rose sit in the kitchen, toast with a cup of coffee, and the laughing track fills the air. Except in my life we sit in the kitchen and toast with ginger root tea.

And this brings me to another installment of Kisses and Disses...

This week's DISSES go to...
*Acupuncture, at least of the stimulation variation.
*The Phoenix Suns. They're kinda slowing down the pace for the Lakers to win the NBA Finals. Let's get it together, boys.
*Pictureless frames. Yes. Yes, I have frames in my house without pictures in them. HUNG ON THE WALL. Please don't get me started.

This week's KISSES go to...
*Acupuncture. I found a new acupuncturist and so far he's been great. I'm still debating if it's a good fit for me, but I'm willing to try.
*My mother in law. I love her Chinese heritage, but I love more that she's passed her best qualities to her son.
*Ezekiel Raisin Bread. This organic, sprouted grain bread is delicious and a healthy breakfast option...and doesn't taste like cardboard.

Happy Monday!

The Knot TV : New York City

A
couple months ago I had the distinct pleasure of being asked by The Knot TV to come and film a short segment about wedding photography tips. I was incredibly excited (okay...and totally nervous!), but somehow being in New York City was able to put me at ease long enough to get through the segment (or maybe it was the falafel I ate literally two minutes before filming) and I had a blast.

If you'd like to watch the five-minute Q+A, you can do so HERE!

And I also need to thank my clients for allowing me to document their love and share their photographs...I'm so blessed to do what I love!

His Reaction to my Reading Aloud
05.20.10
- Personal

J
D walked into our bedroom around 10pm on Saturday, returning from being away for four or five hours. I reached the last page of East of Eden and I still had no clue how John Steinbeck was going to end the book. JD plopped on the bed and Polo jumped up to join us--always remaining firmly tucked between us for fear of being left out--and within moments, I was crying. Hot, wet tears rolled down my face as I closed the book. I had been reading the book for a couple months now and it had become a part of my life. Yes, I know it sounds silly, but it's true. I finished the book and sobbed because my heart was so tangled in human emotion, tragedy, and hope. The book was THAT good. It's part fiction, part social commentary, part amazingness that is Steinbeck. I can't wait to read it again.

I finished The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls before delving into East of Eden, and it's truly remarkable. My good friends, Mella, Amy, and many blog readers recommended this book...and, really? They couldn't have been more spot on. I finished the book in a single day. I sat on my couch and couldn't put it down. I became a permanent fixture in my living room and JD even tried dusting and waxing me. It's a true life story of a woman who grew up with her homeless family and later learned to love them in deep and powerful ways. Such a fantastic read.

And you might be sitting there thinking, Could she be ANY MORE BORING?! And guess what? I'd likely ignore you because I'm used to it. The boys in my life think I'm quite boring and this is their usual reaction to my reading...

Happy Thursday!

Digital Trekker Interview + Podcast

I
woke up this morning and craved a juiced vegetable drink. Yes, I wanted 16 ounces of juiced broccoli, spinach, beets, carrots, kale, and an apple for good measure. After two full days of conference food (i.e. pizza, tacos, and a midday milkshake), my heart stopped beating amidst the hidden MSG. Oh, what was that? Too much information about my eating habits? You should be thankful I didn't bring up the brown sugar I snuck on my morning oatmeal. For shame!

To save you all from the glories of detox living (but, really, juiced garlic is way hot), I thought I'd share a recent interview I was stoked to do with Matt Brandon of The Digital Trekker. He interviews photographers from around the world and shares his kind insight with many people, so I was honored to spend an hour chatting with him. If you'd like to listen to the interview, you're more than welcome to do so here.

Happy Wednesday!
