Julie and Eric : Engagement

S
he noticed him. She watched him from a distance as he entered their college class every week. And, yes, she even saw him once sit behind the sorority girl, lean in from behind her while she wasn’t paying attention, and smell her blond hair.

Julie saw this all from a distance.

Julie, what does this have to do with how we met?!, Eric indignantly asked as he cut into her story with his charming smile. At this, Julie throws her head back at laughs heavenward with much delight. Apparently, such chronological information tickles her pink. The truth of the matter was that when they finally did get the chance to get to know each other, they fell hard. Six years later, they walked along the Downtown Fullerton streets smiling, laughing…and, well, laughing. It’s what makes their relationship work so well. Laughter.

There wasn’t a time longer than four minutes when their conversation wasn’t sprinkled with amusement. Hearty laughter, giddy laughter, chronological-recollection laugher. If happiness is a sign of a healthy relationship, then Julie and Eric will be by each others’ sides for a very long time.

I can’t wait to hang out with them again in October for their wedding at the Orange County Museum of Art…judging on how much fun we had during Julie and Eric’s engagement session, I’m quite sure we’re going to have a ball at their wedding!

I especially love this picture because I think Julie did an awesome job rockin' her totally hot Vera Wang dress...and red shoes...I couldn't ask for more! :)

FAQ : Lenses

But…but…I just don’t know how not to respond…

That was my response to my good friend DJ while we were eating sushi a couple weeks ago. I was expressing the hard time I had responding to every inquiry email from fellow photographers. I love helping people, but I’ve discovered that responding to email is a never-ending mountain to climb! ;)

So, while I’ll still try to respond to the best of my ability, I’m going to be answering FAQ’s on my blog. I’m going to try to do this as much as possible because blogs are the best way to transfer information and facilitate open communication within the wedding industry.

The most frequently asked question as of late is: What lenses do you shoot with? Well, I swap lenses ALL the time, so I don’t really think I use one particular lens more than any other. Here’s some of my favorite gear…

*The 70-200IS, 2.8...a ceremony favorite. This lens is buttery and when it locks into its focal point, it's just awesome!

Here's my dynamic duo...
*16-35, 2.8...This lens gets super wide angles and is an awesome story-telling lens...by this I mean it can truly capture an entire scene in a single snap.
*24-70, 2.8...This lens is pretty much a solve-all as it can be used pretty much in any capacity. It was my first lens and I truly love it as it's like an old teddy bear that I can't get rid of. When I first started, it was all I had and it was SO good to me! :) It's only downfall is that since it's so great within its range, I found myself not walking--or getting involved--with what I was shooting. Now that I'm shooting with prime lenses more often, I'm getting a much different feel to my images because I'm physically more involved with the scene...

The Trifecta...these are my homeboys!
*85mm, 1.8...This is the perfect portrait lens. I can't fully express how much I love this lens...ugh...it produces the creamiest images ever! I often bring this lens out during the ceremony when I want to shoot wide open from a slight distance...I love it!
*50mm, 1.4...This is my rock. I use this lens ALL the time. It just has a way of hammering out consistently sharp images and an awesome background fall-off. However, if I had to choose between the 1.4 and the 1.2, I'd most definitely get the 1.2! I can't wait to upgrade (**hint: the 1.2 will make a great anniversary, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, birthday, or Groundhog's Day present!!**). Also, I shoot most my detail shots with this lens, so it's pretty much a gold mine!
*28mm, 1.8...My newest baby and oh how I love him!! This wide-angle lens is just the funnest and coolest lens ever...it doesn't have any edge distortion and can be shot with a glorious 1.8 aperture! I LOVE prime lenses!!

Anyway, I guess that's it for now...I also have a couple other lenses (like the fisheye), but since I hardly ever use them, it's really pointless to talk about them. I hope this kinda-sorta-helps out a bit...if not, my bad! When I first started, I wished someone wrote about their lenses and why they liked them, so I guess I hope this helps at least one person. If it does, then it was well worth it! :)

Happy Wednesday!

y good friend and fellow photographer, Jen Harris sent me a lovely shout out via email in regard to Pro Photo Resource’s invitation to be a monthly contributor (thanks, Jen!). I’m honored to be part of such a great community and stoked to be posting alongside my fabulous friend and uber talented photographer, David Jay. Nicole and Aaron : Engagement

- Engagements - Slideshows

Oooooooh. The first time they met, she gave him a piece of her mind. And then some more.

Nicole—who’s feisty, yet quite amicable—looked Aaron in the face and let him know that, no, he did not deserve the job promotion and store relocation…she did. Nicole found it appropriate to let this complete stranger know that while it may appear that she was fine with the decision, it wasn’t really okay. Don’t get it twisted.

Apparently, while she was giving him a piece of her mind, she was also relinquishing a part of her heart. And Aaron…well, Aaron now had an earful from a girl he found beautiful and intriguing. A girl who would later become his wife.

A couple years later, they reconnected and fell in love and, while Nicole’s still lively and spirited, Aaron is her calm. Her center. They’re quite different than the pair who met a few years ago over a disputed store relocation and there’s no denying that while Nicole once let him know exactly what was on her mind, they both now share what’s in their hearts.

As they walked Main Street in Disneyland for their engagement session, he guided her through the throngs of people and she walked confidently passed stores filled with candy and souvenirs. They were content staying away from the most congested tourist areas and found nooks and crannies that’d make Mickey and Minnie proud ;)

I’m excited to photograph their wedding this October and I know it’s going to be nothing short of fabulous. Both Nicole and Aaron work for The Wedding Channel, so as we were discussing the details of their day, I became more stoked to document their wedding. We’re going to have a blast and I’m honored to be part of it!

This picture sums up their personalities quite nicely ;)

Auntie and Uncle
08.19.07
- Personal

The past three days have been filled with much emotion and one tiny bundle of joy.

Late yesterday evening, JD and I received the good news that we’re prematurely a new auntie and uncle!!! JD’s sister gave birth to a son and we couldn’t be happier! :)

Little Corey Preston wasn’t expected until late September, but due to some serious health complications, JD’s sister was hospitalized on Wednesday. We’ve been patiently waiting for Corey’s arrival and we finally were allowed into the NICU this morning to see him. Corey will be in the hospital for a while until he can breathe on his own, but by the looks of his personality, we can already tell he’s a fighter!

This is Corey's adorable toes and his daddy's fingers...

Soooo, I know we look totally dorky, but it's our first official picture as auntie and uncle...I had to post it! :)

And here's our lil fighter...

**On a sidenote, I want to thank my clients for their patience and understanding during this time...I promise to catch up on email and responses ASAP!**
