Kisses+Disses : Scrabble + Summer Nights

W
e've stopped playing games together. In fact, we pretty much halted anything that, oh, requires us to stare each other in the face as opponents. It started with a game of Scrabble and ended with me flipping the board and tiled letters when JD cheated won. That was three years ago. We also stopped playing tennis, Snood , and the occasional game of hangman because we're the type of couple who kept a running tally who was beating who. Yes, as in marks on a tiny sheet of paper listing victories and losses.

You're probably thinking we need therapy. WELCOME TO THE CLUB.

After the Scrabble Flipping Incident of 2008, I decided to take a break from competitive...well...competitive anything, which has proven difficult since we challenge each other daily. Who fell asleep first? Who can drink the veggie smoothie the fastest? Who loads the dish washer better?

A few days ago, JD suggested buying a Xbox (Com'on, Jas, it even plays BluRay!), but I politely declined. I mean, I can't even make it through a board game without threatening divorce...could you just imagine me playing Halo?!?

This brings me to another installment of Kisses and Disses...

This week's DISSES go to...
*Games. They're clearly what's wrong with marriage in America these days.
*Newsletters. Just because I emailed someone in the past doesn't mean I automatically want to added to their list.
*Peanut Butter Capt'n Crunch. JD promised it'd change my life, but this cereal pretty much lacks the awesome that is Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Duh.

This week's KISSES go to...
*Organic oranges. I'm obsessed.
*Midnight in Paris. Woody Allen's newest movie just made me swoon and if you're into what life in Paris during the 1940's looked like, this is for you!
*Summer nights. Long walks, late dinners, and dusky skies at 8pm...perfection!

Happy Friday!

Robbie - My dh and I can't play games together. Ever. It gets ugly. He has resorted, in an effort to show his dominance (which is always his goal when we play games together), to posing as one of my kids on Togetherville (Facebook for kids) to 'dare' me at games. Pathetic I say! LOL  07.17.11 - 10:21pm
jenn {bow tie & bustle} - oh my gosh i couldn't agree with you more when it comes to games!! i found my blood pressure rising just reading your post! my husband and i can't play games either cause i end up throwing a temper tantrum when i lose! loved this post jasmine!  07.14.11 - 1:24pm
moraima - well, let me tell you that you are definitely not alone. My husband and I are just like that, we CANNOT play on opposites teams anything ever. And we discovered that as soon as our honeymoon, when we tried to play ping pong. BUT...Halo? you can totally play for the same side and it's AWESOME, so please please tell JD to get the Xbox and after Halo you have to play Gears of War... my super fave! :-D  07.13.11 - 2:58pm
Christy Hermogenes - My husband & I are the same way with miniature golf, we have a running tally, & we can't even talk about it anymore without the "I'm the King of mini golf!" coming out to play.  07.12.11 - 11:07pm
Victor - Seattle Wedding Photographer - I totally agree about competitiveness ruining a marriage! It's great to hear that caught it on time and focused on better stuff in life! Love organic oranges! FTW!  07.10.11 - 9:19pm
Chicago Wedding Photography Studio Finch - LOL you crack me up Jasmine! There is something about board games that can get people fired up ;)  07.10.11 - 2:58pm
Paulette - I'm dying to show this post to my husband, bc I HATE games; not because I'm competetive, but bc I'm decidedly not. (He is, however, and craves any game, any time.) And Midnight in Paris was amazing! I immediately started reading "My Life in France" by Julia Childs when I got home, bc it was the only "French" thing in my house. :)  07.09.11 - 8:16pm
dontsmilenow - I've been known to close the backgammon set..it folds in half and ends a losing game swiftly!  07.09.11 - 5:43pm
briana Moore - Midnight in Paris was my favorite film of the year thus far. So enchanting. James and I actually LOVE to play games together, but I may threaten him from time to time. :) Try Settlers ;)  07.09.11 - 12:34pm
Stephanie - Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the BEST!!  07.09.11 - 11:38am
julie - I agree with everything except the Woody Allen movie. I can't support a movie made by a man who dumped his wife for his adopted daughter. Yuck!  07.09.11 - 10:14am
brianna - Midnight in Paris... my idea. Just want to point out how cultured and refined I am when it comes to my movie choices.   07.09.11 - 7:00am
Anna Lyndon - I've got a solution for you - the board game Pandemic! It's a cooperative board game you play together - you all win or lose together. MARRIAGE SAVER! Take it from two very competitive people...   07.09.11 - 3:07am
LEOLAK - Hilarious! Maybe you guys can try this game called Apples to Apples? I just found out about it and loved it...then again I don't have to keep score w/ anyone...soooo not sure how this will help. lol So agree on the unrequested newsletter deal...so annoying. Happy Friday and weekend!   07.08.11 - 9:09pm
kms - ha! too funny! my husband and i are the same. we learned 'cooperation' by playing taboo (the most hilarious game ever) on the SAME team. give it a shot! :)  07.08.11 - 8:14pm
Cara - Hey, I flipped out over a game of Uno. UNO. Maybe I'm the one that needs therapy...  07.08.11 - 6:50pm
aubry - oh my heck, i was totally nodding my way through this post. i'm so dang competitive for my own good that my hubby refuses to play any game with me. yet when on the same team we are a force to be reckoned with. ha! :) love everything about this post!  07.08.11 - 4:59pm
Sydni Jackson - Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the best cereal ever! Sorry you can't play games together - hope you can eventually find one that's non-competitive! :)  07.08.11 - 3:47pm
rich - friendly competition is hard to keep healthy! we play words with friends now against one another and yes - it becomes a battle just like your scrabble games, haha!  07.08.11 - 2:38pm
Erin - You have just described exactly why my husband and I will never play games against each other because we are the EXACT same way. For better or worse. So we generally play on a team and them team up against friends/family/whoever decides to go up against us. And I second summer nights! SO wonderful! Happy weekend!  07.08.11 - 1:18pm
Shannon Wimberly - Fun-ny!!!  07.08.11 - 12:57pm
Autumn Teesdale - That movie is on my "to see list" (Yes you're not the only list queen out there...I think I am obsessed with lists!) and I love PB Capn Crunch...but Fruit Loops is my daily vice!  07.08.11 - 12:41pm
Juanita - Ha ha! There were five kids in my family growing up and we were banned from playing Monopoly because it was too competitive and we got mean. We still are...I visited my sister recently and we played Scrabble, which I took great delight in winning and her response was similar to yours :)  07.08.11 - 12:35pm
Dawney - LOL! Monopoly was actually banned from my parents' house because it was seriously doing damage to their marriage! As far as newsletters go... I would agree with you, with the exception of the J* newsletter! ;) Have a great weekend!  07.08.11 - 12:34pm
ashley barnett - Ohhh Jasmine this is SO Jeremy and me. We (and I can't believe I'm admitting this)...play hangman on our iPhones and will literally sit in bed next to each other and play each other. Sometimes, even when I promise that I won't make another play, I will sneakily wait till he falls asleep and get one last play in. WHO ARE WE?! :)  07.08.11 - 12:21pm
Leo Bojesen - Games...my sister won't even think of such since I ruined her childhood by winning too much and she ended up getting totally put off. She will probably never play another game for the rest of her life. Sigh. I should've let her win now and again. And summer nights are awesome! I wish they lasted all year round. Cereals...I prefer cinnamon toast crunch and golden grahams but peanut butter crunch is still ok. I'll eat pretty much anything and I'll buy whatever is on sale for the week. lol  07.08.11 - 12:14pm
Christina Dely - OMG! This is hilarious! Good call on veto'ing the video game consule. They ruin lives! And hooray for Summer nights! Nothing I love more than bbq'ing & late nights outdoors without freezing!  07.08.11 - 12:02pm
Sarah Layne - Loved Midnight in Paris too! Just a heads up, it's set in the 1920s! :)  07.08.11 - 11:33am
Dee - I'm totally with you on the Cinnamon Toast Crunch!  07.08.11 - 11:33am
Noa - I am right there with you -- Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the BEST!! I basically lived on this cereal when I served in the Israeli army. You know those freshmen 15 people get in the college here? I gained the Cinnamon Toast Crunch 30 when I served. BLAH! I can't eat it any more, it reminds me of drills, no AC in my barracks, and sleep deprivation. LOL :)  07.08.11 - 11:24am
Tiffany Vaughan - Ah, those were the days of SNOOD! My husband and I LOVED that game!!!   07.08.11 - 11:10am
Jenn Best - Oooooh, I just saw Midnight in Paris last night. So cute! Now I'm really really wanting to go to Paris!  07.08.11 - 11:02am
Lindsay Madden - My hubby & I saw Midnight in Paris last weekend & I, too, was in love with the movie. It was simply magical & FUN. I love all of Woody Allen's films though so I might be a tad biased. =D xo  07.08.11 - 10:52am
Suzy G - Lol, we had to give up games 4 years into our marrage .......It was really bad because we loved sorry and life, both of which are just luck of the draw games, and I always won. My poor sweet hubby was slowly being drivin insane by his not so great sportsmenship, lol.  07.08.11 - 10:52am
Jennifer Hudspeth - agreed. agreed. agreed.  07.08.11 - 10:43am
kristin brown - my husband and i are the same way with games... we had to stop! i get mean when i win and i get mean when i lose, so... :)  07.08.11 - 10:41am
Becca - Oh man. I'm a gamer, as is my fiance, but I've got to say... there are some games we just can't play together. New Super Mario Brother's Wii is divorce in a box. Such a fun game by yourself... If you do get an xbox, I suggest puzzle games that you have to work together to solve (i.e. Portal 2).  07.08.11 - 10:39am
Anne T. - ooooh, the competitive game thing hits a little too close to home. My husband and I are the SAME way. We just started playing Words With Friends...it's not pretty. He's been complaining that he can't win. :)   07.08.11 - 10:38am
Kristin Nicole - We love playing games...but sometimes it gets messy. Glad we are not the only ones.   07.08.11 - 10:38am
jess - I totally kicked my husband's butt in a potato peeling contest! My cholesterol is lower too. Just by a bit, but still. Love your forthright writing. It just makes me laugh.   07.08.11 - 10:37am
Jhoan - Ohh my my this totally made me giggle!! It reminds me of myself! I love all your posts J* you're AMAZING!!!   07.08.11 - 10:37am
Alex Omega - awesome section... im def. a huge fan!  07.08.11 - 10:37am
MartaV - 10000% agree with you on the Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It is the best ceral. 2nd place goes to Kellogs fruit and yogurt. :)  07.08.11 - 10:33am
Dan - I love both cereals, but you're right that Cinnamon Toast Crunch > everything else. Also FYI...you can stream music and movies from your computer to your TV, and also things like Netflix via the 360, but I don't believe it currently has Blu-Ray support. Blu-Ray is a Sony thing, which means a PS3.  07.08.11 - 10:29am
Emily Dobson - When my husband and I were dating, yes DATING, he beat me at a game of Monopoly and I didn't speak to him for an HOUR. Who the heck plays Monopoly withOUT the intention of trading and selling property?  07.08.11 - 10:28am
Dana - I have GOT to see that movie!!! Anything with the beautiful Marion Cotillard in it has to be amazing!!! I would LOVE to photograph her!!!  07.08.11 - 10:28am
Camila Fuenzalida - Loved this! I smiled when imaging you flipping the scrabble board... You both must be very competitive... it's cool to know that you both are so realistic in the fact that you fight and yet you are awesome in wanting to prevent it!   07.08.11 - 10:24am
Elizabeth - Glessner Photography - love love LOVED Midnight in Paris! Such a great and incredibly underrated movie! ...and my husband and I can't play games together either. Especially if we have to be on the same team. It almost always results in yelling, storming off, accusations of being a cheater, etc.  07.08.11 - 10:24am
Lindsey - I side with JD on this one and I might add Captain Crunch on Pinkberry yogurt is outstanding.  07.08.11 - 10:23am
Allison - I have to agree! This is why my hubby and I play tennis on the same team!!!! Occasionally I have to remind him that I don't need his advice, but overall it's a blast!  07.08.11 - 10:22am
Jodie Lemke - you guys are so cute haha! ME and the hubby don't play games either ... its dangerous! Though Settlers of Catan is REALLY fun! I think you could would like that one! It's more strategy! We get along with this one!! :) And YES Cinnamon Toast Crunch IS amazing! I got away with eating that one weekly while i was preggo with our second hahaha...  07.08.11 - 10:21am
Rachel Tatem - You made me laugh with this one! I must disagree though I think that Peanut butter capt'n crunch is equally as awesome as cinnamon Toast Crunch you just have to eat them different. CTC is better as an actual cereal were as PBCC is better as a snack with a glass of milk. Yes, I am a cereal enthusiast but not quite as much as the guy on flakes... by a bit.   07.08.11 - 10:18am
Anton Lenke - Cinnamon. Toast. Crunch. Rocks my socks. For us it's monopoly, but I hear you on that...we've had to pick different arenas in a lot of things we were competitive with, but I've tried to take when I've learned from being a teacher and infuse some of the patience and understanding in myself when I play, practice, and puzzle. Still steering clear of monopoly though ;)  07.08.11 - 10:18am
Sue McFarland - I can relate, Jasmine. I can't play games cause I get way toooooo involved! Your post makes me laugh and be happy I am not the only one with this affliction!! Thanks for sharing your life's ups , downs, good and bads!!  07.08.11 - 10:16am
Kelly - I can totally related to the game issue, except it's my dad and me. My husband lets me pretend I win all the time til I get good. ;) My dad on the other hand doesn't lose anything, very literally anything so I have been bound and determined to make him lose to something for over 2 decades still to no avail, but I haven't given up the game playing quite yet. ;)  07.08.11 - 10:15am
Emily Kicklighter - Funny how much fun games were when we were dating! Post-wedding, same experience...thanks for the confirmation about the therapy, Jasmine! Now, 4 kids later and entering teenagerhood, Family Game Night has brought us to new heights of togetherness. Sounds like we should throw in some organic oranges!!  07.08.11 - 10:12am
kim butler - i totally understand what you mean, I have had many a fights over Halo. I TOTALLY am way to competitive when it comes to games. I feel ya Jas, I feel ya.  07.08.11 - 10:08am
Sarah Mariel - Hahaha! I love this! My hubby and I can't play games together anymore either after a similar incident with checkers. 8 years later and my husband still tells everyone he meets about the checkers pieces flying around the room:)  07.08.11 - 10:07am
