Unmet Goals…and the Start of 2012

Last year JD and I sat in a hotel room and wrote in silence. We'd be doing the same thing at the beginning of each year since we'd be married, and most of our notes had been written in the same notebook. I tell him he can't look at my goals until he's done writing his own, on a separate page. He tears a piece of a croissant on a nearby plate and rolls his eyes because he thinks my rules of senseless. But I love rules. Rules! Rules! Rules! I'm way good at them.

A bit later, after JD had finished, I asked to read his…and then compare ours. The differences in our goals were staggering (I mean, who doesn't want to own a pet chimpanzee?!), but we committed each other to help each step a long the way.

But that's not what this post is about. It's not the goals we met, but–rather–where I missed the mark. I learn the most from my mistakes, missteps, and unmeetinggoal-ness (a totally scientific term), so I'm going to share what I didn't make happen in 2011…

*Stop Comparing Myself to Others. In every capacity.
-I'm ashamed to say this was one of the hardest tasks for me. I look to others and measure my self/work/business/success/opportunities/hair and know I'll never be satisfied with where I'm headed, if I'm not happy with how far I've come. This is changing in 2012.
*Weigh 1_5. Legitimately (if you think I'd admit that number on the world wide web, you're trippin')
-It's a known fact I struggled/struggle with my weight and I'm committed to getting to my goal weight this year. (This has also been the same goal since I was 12 years old…clearly, I need intervention).
*Invest Our Savings.
-With the media's proclamation of doom and gloom, I felt like saving loose dollar bills under my mattress, but this year I'm dedicated to finding the best investments for our future goals. While it may not be much, it'll be a step in the right direction.
*Make a Polo Calendar and Donate Proceeds to an OC Animal Shelter.
-A few readers suggested this idea last year and I loved it, but I never got around to finding a way to make it happen…and it bums me out. This year I hope to take more pictures of Polo (hey, you…yes, you…please stop rolling your eyes!) with hopes of generating money for a great cause.

JD and I are still working on our 2012 goals (number one goal for 2012: create my goals on time!), but I look forward to learning from the past and carving a future we're proud to make. As an entrepreneur, I hope find time to list your goals so you can look back at year's end and see how far you've come.

Happy 2012!
