The Jasmanian Grinch

P
lease don’t ask me how, but I just discovered The Grinch and I are long-lost cousins. Once removed by marriage. And if you’ve seen me lately, you’ll notice an uncanny resemblance, complete with a furrowed brow and unforgiving eyes.

I spent the last few days trying to accumulate last-minute Christmas gifts in swarming hives—oops, I meant shopping malls—attempting to salvage my last ounce of holiday cheer. As much as I’ve tried listening non-stop to Christmas carols, wondering what figgy pudding really is, and dressing Polo like Santa, I’m still feeling like the Grinchest of them all.

Today, as JD and I were buying wrapping paper in a line spanning the length of what appeared to be the Atlantic Coast, he rolled his eyes at one of my impatient comments. I turned to him and said, Heeey, YOU’RE not allowed to be grumpy…I think you’re acting a little Jasminesque.

JD looked at me dead-on and dramatically rolled his eyes again. Just in case I missed it the first time.

Jasmanian. That’s what JD said I should call people when they’re acting like the decrepit side of me. Apparently, Jasminesque sounds a little too nice. So, the next time your son is acting up in the grocery store, or your husband won’t relinquish the remote control, just turn to them and say, Stop acting so Jasmanian! That should get them straightened out right quick! ;)

Tonight JD and I are calling it quits and renting a movie. To be honest, I had a very nice dinner with my family celebrating my sister’s birthday, and I’m quite sure a nice holiday movie will make the evening even better.

So, maybe if I’m lucky—and I hand over the remote control nicely—my Grinchy appearance will disappear…and my Jasmanian characteristics will thrown away with all our extra wrapping paper!

Jasmine C. - Omigosh! I say that to Adam ALL THE TIME... "YOU'RE not allowed to be grumpy. That's my job!" hehe. Hope you're having a great time in Nicaragua. Central America is so much fun!  12.27.07 - 12:26pm
Simply Modern Weddings - I had a touch of that feeling yesterday as well. Uhhh, those dreaded shopping malls. All I needed was a couple stocking stuffers...spent all day at the mall and 3 stores, only to get 1 stocking stuffer. Oh well.   12.23.07 - 10:56pm
cassandra m - you are too funny. i can't see you getting impatient...i just see you smiling and laughing, thinking of all the gifts JD has probably bought you...ha.ha.   12.23.07 - 2:47pm
Samantha - Christmas for me became TONS less stressful when we stopped buying gifts for EVERYONE in our family (who really doesn't need anything anyway). Instead we take on angel tree kids or other needy families that really need things moreso than us. The fun of Christmas shopping has been restored! Another interesting thing I heard this morning is how many of us see Christmas as an inconvience. Whoa, that hit hard!! Think about it. ; )  12.23.07 - 10:16am
Araxi - the Grinch actually sums it up best "Maybe Christmas doesn"t come from a store. Maybe Christmas....perhaps...means a little bit more!" I had to stop and remind myself this year. So I did my shopping online to keep from cussing and swearing through the Christmas season :P   12.23.07 - 9:17am
angel swanson - a few weeks ago i FINALLY tried figgy pudding at a get-together with some friends. it's kind of like a super moist cake... or a bread pudding. not my favorite dessert, but i was excited to solve a mystery! i had wondered the same thing!!  12.23.07 - 7:57am
Nena - I would not get down about things. I think people feel an overt pressure to be someone or do something because it's the holiday season. Just remember that gifts aren't everything; the birth of Jesus Christ is. :)  12.23.07 - 7:15am
kerri mccconnell - christmas really snuck up on everyone this year. i for one am JUST now feeling christmas-y, but that tends to be hard to do when it's 85 degress outside 2 days before that big day! atleast jd lets you buy paper... rick sys i can't purchase any more for about another 6 years. apparently, my wrapping paper habit is considered an obession to some... :)  12.23.07 - 2:19am
gabriel ryan - carlie and i took a quick stop by the outlet mall in cabazon, on the way out to the desert today... which i think is where the wrapping-paper-line of yours ended. pretty much everyone and their mother was there.  12.22.07 - 8:28pm
