How Do I Find Clients?

When I first started my business, I couldn't find a client who was interested in my services if my life depended on it. In fact, I tried giving my services away for free and still no one hired me. Now, THAT was a punch to the gut.

Or so I thought.

You see, I had it all wrong. I asked why clients weren't finding me, when what I should've been asking is how do I find clients? When I made the decision to search for clients (I actually hunted for clients, but that makes me sound creepy), I created a list of where they'd be and then placed myself in those environments. Very much like that scene in Legally Blond when Elle Woods runs into her ex-boyfriend at Harvard Law School and was all, Warner, I totally forgot you go here!

In 2006 I started a blog and wrote about getting married, newlywed life, and starting a business. And guess what? Clients slowly began finding my posts as they searched the web for wedding advice, newlywed insights, and photography. I joined online wedding forums and offered advice and answered questions . I volunteered to photograph events at church (Christians love to get married!), so parishioners could see me work in a professional capacity. I networked at industry events. This list goes on.

My goal wasn't trying to prove I was a professional, it was to show I was a helpful, serious, and passionate entrepreneur with a camera. Within a few months, the hunting searching paid off. People reached out and asked me to work with them. I no longer felt like I had to convince people who I was, they saw me for everything I aspired to be.

You want clients? Stop waiting for them to find you. Go find them. Find them in Facebook groups, find them at alumni association meetings, find them at your son's soccer games, find them in your yoga class. Start talking to people about the thing you do, offer helpful resources, and genuinely care about what they need and soon you'll have people lining up for your services.
