Crystal : Anytime

J
D and I spent the last couple of days in Santa Barbara enjoying the company of each other. JD will be traveling a lot in the near future, so he thought a weekend away will be the perfect way to escape the electricity of everyday life in Orange County.

Any trip to Santa Barbara wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t see a few of our friends, so we stayed at David Jay’s house and soaked up the gorgeous view and beauty of California. I make no qualms expressing how much David means to me, but I do have to admit that he wouldn’t be half the man he is without his amazing assistant extraordinaire, Crystal.

Crystal has morphed into David’s right-hand and made his life so much more enjoyable because he’s freed to focus on what he’s called to do, not what he needs to do. Not only is she selfless, professional, efficient, caring, and loving, she’s so much fun! She’s beautiful inside and out, so when she asked if I’d be able to take a few pictures of her, I happily obliged!

Because DJ was away while I photographed Crystal, I snagged his 50mm, 1.0 and shot everything between a 1.0-1.2...dang, I really love that lens and I'm trying to figure out a way to steal it from DJ without him noticing. I'm taking a ideas, so holla back if you got a good one! ;)

Because one picture can't possibly sum up Crystal's awesomeness, I had to create a little collage of who she really is! ;)

DJ and Crystal, thank you SOOOO much for always being so wonderful. JD and I love you and while we try to express our appreciation, we often fall short. We’re shackled to your kindness and hospitality and want to thank you for always being examples of how we should live our lives!

EDITED TO ADD: Here's a picture from DJ's blog I grabbed of all of us at breakfast...Deyl found out Sharkee's offers a HUGE breakfast and unlimited mimosas for only $3.50, so we ate like royalty! :)

Jay Tsai - I love the long horizontal collage, that's a great idea! So many different faces, expressions, and emotions!  02.24.08 - 11:06pm
Crystal - What a perfect way to describe what an assistant does. :) You are the best!  02.22.08 - 6:01pm
Jasmine* - @j.ro: In the case of picture #2, I focused on the eye that was closest to me...this is what I do all the time. Yes, the left eye may not be as sharp, but it's definitely sharp enough to maintain the integrity of the image...at least I hope! :) @Erik: Being "called" to do something is much different than "needing" to do something. For instance, a fireman is called to extinguish flames, not, say, make his breakfast every morning. He's called to the line of duty, but he needs to also eat. If the fireman had someone to cook for him, it'd free him to focus on putting out fires, working out, or staying focused on his job. Having an assistant frees a person to focus on their calling, rather than their needs. :)  02.22.08 - 3:03pm
j.ro - these photos are beatiful. it looks like you really captured her. how in the world do you get both eyes in focus at f/1.2 when her head isn't straight on? (like #2) Is that a basic stupid question? anywho, great shots. btw, i had the 70-200 2.8 for the first time at a wedding ceremony (only my second wedding) and though it was great my arm about fell off :o) i traded it in for the lovely 85 mm 1.8 which you originally recommended and i LOVE it! thanks for your advise! jayne  02.22.08 - 8:08am
Tiffany - the series is her being silly and smiley is great  02.21.08 - 12:39pm

Rachel Brooke - i thought that lens was an urban myth! I'd try to steal it too! ;)  02.19.08 - 8:40pm
Erik Dungan - How is being what you're "called" to do different than what you "need" to do? I'd honestly like to know. Great pictures.  02.19.08 - 2:26pm
kymberli q. - These are beautiful (as usual!) and she looks like a lot of fun! :)  02.19.08 - 2:24pm

Jasmine* - @Jason: Yes, I adore Magic Sharp and use it on every image I post...but I only run it once. If you run it more than that, it'll make the image look totally funky! :) @Erika and Kelly: I wish I could tell you I was a PS Pro, but I'm not! I'm more of a cheater than anything else! ;) I actually use Kevin Kubota's borders for all my images and collages. You can find them at: www.kubotaimagetools.com . Hope this helps! :)  02.18.08 - 4:04pm

Jason - Nice 1.0 work Jasmine! The bokeh is beatiful with that thing! Question, you've mentioned that you use Magic Sharp on all your images.....do you apply it more than once per photo?
