Kisses + Disses : Movies of the 80s
|

| A couple of days ago, I shared the following on social media: |

What transpired online what a lot of shock and awe...which made me feel totally uncool and out of touch. Apparently, watching teen movies from the 1980s is a rite of passage and having not done so, I was somehow incomplete.
BUT let the record show that it isn't my fault. Like any normal American kid, I totally blame my parents. I tried explaining that my lack of awesome John Hughes movie viewings (no, I haven't seen 16 Candles or Ferris Bueller's Day Off) was on account of my parents' conservatism (I wasn't allowed to watch The Smurfs, either). As far as sheltered kids were concerned, my parents treated my sheltering like it was code red bomb alerts.
However, I can admit seeing Dirty Dancing as a kid without my parents' knowledge. A group of neighborhood kids smuggled a VHS recording of the movie and we watched it in Wendy Florez's basement on a sunny afternoon. My legs were glued to the sofa (due in part to Patrick Swayze's abs and in part to the fear of God striking me dead for my sins) and I was smitten. Days later I got in trouble for fighting with my sister and sent to my room. Behind closed doors I said, NOBODY PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER!!
And that line? Well that made the risk of watching Dirty Dancing entirely worth it. Amen.
This leads me to another installment of Kisses and Disses... |

This week's DISSES do to...
*Parental conservatism. My mom clearly kept me from being cool.
*Game night. Yesterday friends came over for dinner and games, and once I revealed my competitive streak, I'm certain they'll never come over again...nothing gets between me and bragging rights.
*Patrick Swayze. He made me realize I'll never have a man lift me above his head on a dance floor. |

This week's KISSES go to...
*JD. He bought me Breakfast Club so we could enjoy a taste of the 80s together.
*B Toffee. If you love toffee (as I do), look no further. This Newport Beach shop has your sweet tooth covered...love it!
*Internet friends. Y'all made me appreciate my sheltered life, but also excited to catch up on a series of great movies!
Happy Friday! |

Kisses + Disses : Captain EO
|

| Last Saturday I celebrated my birthday and the day couldn't have been better. The entire week was devoted to what JD called BIRRRRTHDAAAAAY EXTRAVAGAAAANZA! And he says it just like that. It's rather odd, but I deal with it because it's filled with twists and surprises leading up to my big day. On Saturday, we arrived at Disneyland just before sunset and I squealed like a little girl. It's been years since I've been to the Magic Kingdom, but it was just as special as I remembered as a kid. |

We spent the evening eating every bad thing in sight (churros! pineapple ice cream! funnel cake! I'm on a sugar high!) and mapped my favorite rides before the fireworks show. On top of my list was seeing Captain EO. Oh, yes, the 3D short film starring Michael Jackson. I dragged JD into the theater donning our yellow glasses and sang the songs before it started. JD tried shushing me, but this only encouraged moon walking to my seat.
It was then I confessed to JD I saw Captain EO eight times when I was a child. In one day. I memorized the choreography and my mom even bought me the Captain EO shirt...which I wore only on the most special occasions. Watching the film years later rekindled the fondest memories...and I was happy to dance along in my seat like I was a kid again.
The only thing that would've made the day complete would have been JD joining me for a robot rendition of We Are Here to Change the World, hip thrusts and all.
This leads me to another installment of Kisses and Disses... |

This week's DISSES go to...
*My inability to track down a Captain EO t-shirt (no, really, I'd wear it tomorrow if I could...it's cute...honest).
*My lack of will power. Birthday Extravaganza proved to disastrous my dietary regime.
*Falling asleep. It takes half an hour at night, half a second in the morning. |

This week's KISSES go to...
*Breville Juicer. My family gave me a juicer for my birthday and I'm smitten. I feel healthier just looking at it. Tried it for the first time yesterday and the clean up process was pretty awesome and the juice (kale, spinach, apple, beets, ginger, and ginger) was ahhhhmazing. Oh no, I'm starting to talk like JD.
*Milani Liquid Eye Pencil. This pencil eyeliner is from Target and perfect for a dramatic evening out. It's creamy, so I set it for a smoky eye and I adore it.
*RDIO.com. I love this site and I've downloaded the app. It's like Pandora, but you can stream an entire record...and there's no commercials!
Happy Tuesday! |

Kisses + Disses : 10 Seconds
|

L ast Friday I sat across a friend and we spoke about life, and the mangled path it can sometimes take. We spoke about mistakes, love, loss, and heartache...but we also spoke about the ability we possess to let moments slip from our hands like grains of rice. Of everything we can do, everything we can say, we choose--sometimes unconsciously--to edit our words. To refrain from saying what crosses our minds in a split second.
You have ten seconds, he said, just ten seconds to say what you're thinking or else the moment will pass and be forgotten. I was struck with how little and how big this idea was. We started recounting things we should've said, but didn't. Thanks for washing the dishes. You look beautiful tonight. Hug me a little longer. I'm sorry. |

In the span of life, ten seconds is but a flicker of a flame. And yet it could leave an indelible impression on those you love. Here's to cherishing every ten seconds.
This leads me to another installment of Kisses and Disses... |

This week's DISSES go to...
*Not saying what I should in the ten seconds it takes to cross my mind.
*The TSA agent who patted by hair bun walking through security...made me feel like I was part of a petting zoo.
*Barely getting around to exchanging a few Christmas gifts. Internet, it's been two months since the holidays. TWO. |

This week's KISSES go to...
*Engagements. I discovered a friend proposed to his long-time girlfriend last week and I, literally, squealed like a piglet.
*Tea. I secretly think I'm part English with the amount of tea I drink...
*Concealer. It's been said diamonds are a girl's best friend, but the dark circles under my eyes? They'd disagree.
Happy Tuesday! |

| A couple weeks ago, I mentioned dressing Polo as Santa when I'm having a bad day. He wasn't feeling the full outfit for this photo shoot, but I did manage to get him to pose with his hat. He clearly looks like he's enjoying himself. This probably isn't the time I mention the hat plays Santa Claus is Coming to Town, huh? |

Kisses + Disses : Cheese Slices + Crock Pots
|

I t was the first time we ventured to one of those fancy movie theaters. The type of place with a full menu, bar, and dessert station, not to mention a silent dress code (no, I didn't get the memo about wearing black thigh-high boots, so I stuck out like a prude little finger). We ordered our meal (this is the part I should make up and say I got a salad, but I really ordered veggie sliders) and watched the Lakers game before the movie started (like I said, this place was fancy living). When the meal arrived, I asked the waiter for a side of cheese (who eats sliders without cheese?!), but when he returned...wait for it...wait for it...he brought out three slices of Kraft American singles ON HIS BARE HAND.
Should I repeat that last part? Cheese. On his flesh.
Not knowing what to do, I took the slices from his limp fingers and thanked him. I don't know why I thanked him. I should have been all, Dude, I'd rather eat cheese off a cow's utter, but I'm not the confrontational type.
I'm, apparently, the passive aggressive type who'll blog about the experience with the Internet so we can commiserate over this grossness and that one time you found a hair in your burrito. OH I KNOW YOU HAVE A STORY...go ahead, admit it.
This leads me to another installment of Kisses and Disses... |

This week's DISSES go to...
*Cheese on bare hands. Need I say more?
*Infomercials. I ordered Cindy Crawford's skin care line after becoming obsessed with a miracle melon from France that's supposed to make the lotion magical (in not so many words), but I've discovered it's no better than a $4.99 jar of Ponds cold cream.
*Sugar. It somehow finds a way into my mouth, stays on my hips, and nestles deep in my heart. |

This week's KISSES go to...
*Online shopping. Completed my entire Christmas list in a single day. I'm so organized this year I'm annoying myself.
*My crock pot. I made dinner twice this week (TWICE...that's gotta be a new record!) and I'm crowning myself the Queen of Split Pea soup.
*Canine Santa hats. Whenever I'm having a bad day, I simply dress Polo like jolly St. Nick and, boom, my day is better.
Happy Wednesday! |
